Pampered Pets

March 31, 2008

When it comes to our wedding we are good at pampering ourselves but what about our pets?   As we decideed to expand the magazine to include some ideas for your home and families we sent our new pet photographer Jess Swazey out to find some ideas.

The Boston Metropolitan area is filled with>places to pamper our minds, bodies and purseaddictions.  But what about our pets?If you are anything like me, your four legged friend is not only a part of your family, but also a point on your shopping list.  I am always on the lookout for fun toys, tasty treats, and much to my boyfriend’s dismay, new outfits for my darling Olga.  I was fortunate to stumble across Polka Dog Bakery, a fantasy store for both pets and their owners.>>     Polka Dog is located in the South End at 256 Shawmut Ave, a street lined with a delicious combo of salons, eateries and boutiques.  The light and airy store instantly brings visual excitement from people, and wagging tails from pets.  Dogs are greeted with a>complementary biscuit, while owners   are greeted by friendly, knowledgeable staff.

And while the wide
array of baked goods sound delicious; the after dinnermints and Happy Birthday cookies are for your dogs, not you!  Polka Dog was founded by Deb and Rob, two friends who were charmed by a one-eyed dog named Pearl that they discovered while traveling through Puerto Rico. Deb used to bake for Pearl, and when the two creatives>decided to open a business together, Pearl was the inspiration.

While Deb and Rob had no business
experience and found the road to success to be difficult at first, they have learned from their customer’s needs and desires.  It is clear from the parade of gyrating tails that filters constantly through the store that they have developed a loyal following.  Grainy black and white photographs of>their first few years of doggie customers adorns the walls and adds to the store’s visual delight.  There are several reasons why Polka Dog bakery is a unique pet store that is not to be missed.  The first is that all treats are baked by Polka Dog using>natural ingredients.  You can find Polka Dog goods in small businesses around the Boston area as well as in some Whole Foods supermarkets.  They also carry a wide variety of organic and natural pet foods, their most popular being raw dog food.  For health and earth conscious pet owners, Polka Dog is a great place to>find food that is great for your pet’s stomach and well being, as well as the environment.   Aside from all the edible options, Polka Dog offers fashionable collars, pet-wear and accessories.  They always make an effort to purchase goods from other small businesses and this results in a unique>inventory of pet stuff that you could never find at a>large pet chain-store.

Polka Dog caters to pet owners
who love the outdoors; offering an in-house designed>flexible water/food dish that can be smooshed into your gym bag or suitcase, and water safety-wear for dogs.  While their cat section is small, they are not>neglected.    Polka Dog Bakery is a great place to stop if you are looking for natural treats, adorable accessories and a smiling and helpful staff.  Find them at 256 Shawmut Ave in Boston, Massachusettes, or at>www.polkadog.com.

Have you considered introducing literature into your wedding?

March 27, 2008

Have you ever dreamed of being the subject of a Romance Novel?   Here is a unique way to share your story with your friends and family. Editor Michael Cohen, of One True Romance, tells your story in a full-length, custom-written book to share with your wedding guest and family.   What most brides end up doing is giving the novel out as a gift at the wedding.  I haven’t read one yet, but I love reading romance novels!  Here is a mini excerpt:
Chapter three: About 20 minutes into the movie Mike began to pay an inordinate amount of attention to Kristin’s hand as it lay on the armrest. Drawn as he was into the movie’s unfolding plot, he couldn’t help but think about the fact that Kristin was sitting there next to him, She looked beautiful, her hair falling in a straight line past her shoulders. She gazed out from under long, soft lashes as she watched the move with intense eyes. He sneaked another sideways glance at her hand. Should I go in? He focused back on the screen. Yeah, I should. He waited a few beats and tied to be casual as he slide
his hand over hers and laced their fingers together… Wedding Chroniclesare personalized newsletters that introduce the Bride’s family to the Groom’s family. Think of the weddings you’ve attended.  Usually, you know the Bride or the Groom, but not both.  Even if you do know the happy couple, haven’t you wondered who their attendants are, and how they chose them?  Or how the happy couple met?   Didn’t you want to learn more about their families and friends,  their future plans . . . Wedding Chronicles™can provide those answers and more. Most couples use the personalized newsletters as reception favors — a unique activity to fill the awkward moments when guests have arrived, but the Bridal Party is off at a formal photo session.Unlike chocolate roses, plastic swans, sugared almonds and glass goblets, Wedding Chronicles™can be mailed anywhere to people who could not attend (or were not invited to) the ceremony and reception.  They can be slipped in a photo album or Wedding Time Capsule and become a treasured keepsake — a mini-family history, in fact. Here is a sample articleLike Brides and Grooms, each Wedding Chronicle™ is unique. And, because every Bride and Groom has his or her own story to tell, each Wedding Chronicle™ is different. Here are a selection of articles that appeared in previous editions of Wedding Chronicles.™Like Brides and Grooms, each Wedding Chronicle™ is unique. And, because every Bride and Groom has his or her own story to tell, each Wedding Chronicle™ is different. Here are a selection of articles that appeared in previous editions of Wedding Chronicles.™Something Old . . .The legend of the Old English rhyme indicates wearing something old transfers the good luck the bride amassed in her single life to her new life. Something new symbolizes her life as a married woman. Something borrowed connects the bride to her community, family and friends. The color blue symbolizes fidelity and is often associated with the purity of the Virgin Mary.Carol’s ‘something new’ is her wedding gown — ‘Ilissa’ by Demetrios. The bodice is a rose pattern, embossed on guipure lace. The winter-white gown features a basque waist, contessa neckline and full chiffon skirt, all accented by a simple headpiece and fingertip-length veil.Over the years, pharmacist Raymond Darsh saved the gold coins that passed through his cash register. Carol’s mother, Ruthie, saved her father’s coins and shared one of them with her daughter today to represent ‘something old and a sixpence in her shoe.’‘Something borrowed’ is a crinoline from Karen Nelson, Carol’s good friend who was married last fall. Representing ‘blue’ in the poem are the sapphires in the Bride’s engagement ring.Browne — Martin Nuptials

Upcoming Articles

March 26, 2008

This week I am talking to two very different and very fabulous wedding invitation designers.  Pictures and everything will be on the way!

The other big articles to be on the lookout for.   A book I am reading,  “Wonderful Marriage”   Right now I am about halfway through it,   but it is a truly inspiring book.

“Skin Care -  The Ingredients -  What are they”    (Any skin care professionals out there that want to help me with the research on this one,  I will be eternally grateful)    My unfortunate and ongoing fight with acne is the inspiration for this article.  Seeing as how I am a newlywed,  I am buying my skin care right now in pharmacy,  not the spa  (unfortunately)   But my numerous appointments with dermatologist, estiticians and other skin care professionals helped me make my decisions as I was looking at ingredients with words like peroxide, and acid in them!

And at the beginning of next week you can expect an article about interior design, and of course, more pictures to help with this!

Big projects still in the works for the site:   We are still working on developing the home and children’s section of the site.
