Real Wedding - Richelle and Doug
June 3, 2008
Here are a few favorite images from Richelle and Doug’s wedding in Lakeville, MA. One of the best parts of the day was at the reception, at Lebaron Hills Country Club we went for a quick ride on a golfcart to the best part of the golf course to grab a few images. Here are just a few of my favorites from the slideshow
A few little notes
The getting ready pictures were at Holiday Inn Express, Middleboro MA
The Ceremony was in a Church right down the street
The Reception was at Lebaron Hills Country Club
I don’t know who did the hair, or where the dress came from, but both were beautiful!

Some Real Wedding Ideas
May 26, 2008
Now that wedding season is upon us, I should have lots of real wedding ideas. Here are a few to start with.

Branding the tone of your day, create a great first impression
April 8, 2008
It has been said before that a wedding invitation should set the tone of your day and reflect how you want your wedding to be perceived. With this in mind choosing your invitations is a BIG decision!
Letterpress, everyone loves Letterpress!
To help get an understanding of what Letterpress is, I met with Megan from Megan Creates After meeting with her and really seeing the process, (which is fascinating) all I can say is, WOW! Do I ever have a new appreciation for the art!
These are thin plastic “plates” made from the
original design. This plate goes in the press and gets inked by rollers. The plate gets pressed into the paper, leaving behind an inked impression. Although it’s not considered proper, if you pack the press, you can make the plate bite deep into the paper, particularly when the paper is thick, soft, and cotton. This impression can be seen and felt. This form of printing is particularly popular right now for note cards, weddings, birth announcements and the like. If you run your fingers over it, you can feel the impression in the paper and even see it if you look closely.
- 1. Once you have a design, you send out for plate making (1 plate per color) and this can take about a week. In the meantime, cut the paper to size.

- 2. Mix your ink or use a pre-mixed Pantone color (rubber based ink)

- 3. Put a dab of ink on the ink disk and the rollers spread the ink evenly across the disk until it’s a nice even coat covering it.

- Here she is spreading the ink out evenly.

- Pieces and parts of the press

- 4. Put the plastic plate onto the base, and put the base in the chase. The chase goes into the letterpress.

- 5. Take an impression and see if it’s straight (adjust the plate accordingly until it is perfect). Also check the ink is even and the print is even all across.
- Make adjustments as necessary until print is perfect.

- Each card is printed one at a time by hand and inspected closely for quality. It’s a true art and very time-consuming, but the results are outstanding and well worth the efforts. The resulting paper treasure becomes a keepsake prized by the owner, hidden away in a box or tacked to a wall. It’s just too nice to toss away! When you write special note on a letter pressed card hidden under a pillow or tucked in a lunch box, you can know that it will be treasured and saved for a lifetime.

- 6. Put each piece of paper in and print one at a time, until all pieces have been pressed. (this takes the longest). This is also the part that is dangerous. The machine is heavy and goes fast, watch out for those fingers if you want to keep them!

- Cleaning
- 7. Clean the ink disk and rollers and then repeat above steps if there is a second color to print and then clean it all again!

- Storage - Boxes of Beautiful Crane Paper!
- Megan creates… uses Crane’s Lettra paper as it’s house paper. It comes in 3 colors: Fluorescent white (a bright crisp white), Pearl White (a soft ivory shade)
and Ecru (the most yellow of the three–the color reminds us of French Vanilla ice-cream). This paper is soft, fluffy, and luxurious. It’s 100% cotton and
a favorite for letter-pressers and paper-lovers all over. It feels like it’s been brushed…it has a soft tooth to it making it feel almost fabric-like. As a paper-
lover, Megan finds herself rubbing her cheek against this paper with happiness. And it takes a beautiful impression from the press…the recipient
will be in awe of your stationery not just because of the fabulous design, but also the amazing paper!

- Maintenance

- Other Tools of the Trade!

- The old letters

- Letterpress is hand-crafted. Each piece of paper is put in one at a time. Each color is done separately. I recently printed a 2 color business card (150 cards) for someone and it took a total of 5 hours to
- print when I count the little adjustments and issues that popped up. That doesn’t include design time, time for ordering plates, paper cutting, expenses for the plates, paper and ink, shipping fees etc.
- Letterpress is NOT for the small budget for these reasons. I call it the “Rolls Royce” of printing.

- Offset printing is what we know printing to be today. Big presses are loaded up with your job and shot out at lightning speed. The results are
true to the design and the ink sits flat on the paper. You can’t feel it. The colors are vivid, smooth, and true. Most everything is offset
printed these days…the flyer’s in the mail, mass-produced greeting cards, magazines, advertising, brochures…the list goes on and on.
Offset printing can cost less than letterpress for small projects…it is a fine choice when your budget is a concern. - Thermography: to quote Wikipedia: “Thermography printing is also a post print process done immediately after printing. It can be done inline or
offline as long as the ink is wet. Thermography powder is applied to the sheet of paper after it leaves the printing press. The sheet is then vacuumed
or shaken to remove excess powder. This leaves powder only where there is wet ink. The sheet then travels through a heat tunnel; there the heat
causes the powder to melt which leaves a raised effect. It is commonly used on letterheads, business cards, greetings cards, gift wrap,
packaging and can also be used to print braille text.”
It looks and feels like engraving. You can run your fingers over the letters and feel that they are raised up off the page. They have a shiny look to them.
This technique is used when you need it to feel “more special” than just using regular offset printing. Megan creates… teams up with a great vendor
for offset printing, engraving, and thermography if you so choose to use these techniques instead of letterpress. Prices will vary and time must be
alloted to work with the vendor for such projects. It’s all up to you! - Some Other Ideas. These invitations are some other creations from Megan for clients that were looking for something other then letterpress. These are her offset ink creations

- Reasons to hire a designer. To me one of the most amazing things about working with a designer is how they can help you take your ideas and help you implement it. A designers job is to think beyond your first idea and make sure your idea goes beyond cliché. One story Megan told me about is when she was going to school for advertising an assignment was to take three triangles and come up with some unbelievable amount of combinations. The real point to this was that the real good ideas could be idea number 33, or idea 62.
- What a designer is going to do is to work with the budget at hand and create the best most innovated work, as opposed to a cookie-cutter approach. People who tend to call a designer are looking for something that really sets them apart. Makes an impact on their guest. The brides that are going this extra mile want their guest to go to the mailbox and have that “Wow” factor. “The whole reason I am coming to a designer is that I want my guest to know that this was done custom, made just for me.”

Amy ABCD designs
- Artist, designer and newly married stylist living in New York City. Amy says she delights in telling a story through collections of lovely things. She considers her blog a digital sketchbook of sorts - images will come, go … and evolve into perfect packages to be sent through the post office.
- Here are some Words from Amy about her designs.
- Invite people to share in lives most memorable moments.
- Weddings - New Babies - New Homes - Big Announcements
- Each milestone in life sets the tone.
- All invitations and announcements created by papercupp will reveal more than just who, what, and where, they will create the first glimpse of your wedding day and more importantly leave a lasting impression for years to come. By quietly telling stories and capturing your memories papercupp designs will become a personal token to mark a special date – your memories made permanent on paper.
- Papercupp truly believes in this world of e-vites and e-mails there is a place in the postbox for a beautifully designed keepsake. Each invitation suite is a work of art to be packaged and placed in the post. An object d’art that your loved ones will cherish long after the party is over.
- Many papercupp enthusiasts choose our style of envelope art for the mailing process. By decorating envelopes with custom rubber stamps and personalized postage stamps, each envelope becomes a mini work of art. Perfection is in the imperfection. Each time you press the rubber stamp onto the envelope you get a slightly different image than the last time you stamped. By repeating the image you get a collage effect that is simply stunning. There is nothing more exciting than getting a papercupp envelope in the postbox!
- To get started…
If you are located in New York City or the surrounding area, I would be pleased to get together and show you examples of papercupp designs. At that meeting we will discuss your event in detail. Our Greene Street Studio is located in the center of lively Soho. Sipping champagne, espresso (or both!) we will discuss your big day surrounded by turn of the century architecture, velvet pillows and vintage posters. Really, what could be better?
If you are located in the United Kingdom, I work from Central London six times a year. Why not e-mail papercupp and we can get started on your suite from afar? thirsty@papercupp.com - If you’re not local - it is no trouble … Thanks to modern technology papercupp is available to work with any bride or event planner no matter where you are in the world. Since most of our interaction can happen over the phone or through email, we are able to work together on your time. We will work in a way that fits with your schedule and lifestyle. As a matter of fact, I just finished an entire wedding suite where I never actually spoke with the bride-to-be! I don’t prefer to work that way, but sometimes that is just how it works out.
- This also brings added convenience for the clients located in New York or London who may have limited time to meet in person. Of course, if you are visiting or located in one of these Cities and you would like a personal meeting, this option is always available.
- How does papercupp work?
- Each person, each couple, each life event has its own story to be told. My design work is very hands on - I delight in telling your story through the custom wedding stationary that I create from the tales you tell me. Each Wedding Suite, Baby Announcement, and Invitation is unique because the designs are based on your story and style. Papercupp uses traditional images to evoke a turn of the century feeling and updates them with a clean esthetic, eye for detail and energetic graphics.
- For Weddings, I have a simple questionnaire that I will have the happy couple fill out - it will give me a feel for the mood you want to create on your wedding day. In our initial meeting we discuss colors, mood, and all other details. At this point the bride and groom are welcome and encouraged to provide any magazine tares, fabric swatches, inspirational images, wording and other items that may evoke the mood they want to create.
- A word about Pricing …
- A deposit of half my design fee is required to commence the design process. Once we have a completed suite and it is ready for print, the second half is due. Papercupp will walk through the printing process with you. I will be on site for press checks and deliver the suite in a perfect package.
- Design fee $1000
- An offset printing package with 150 printed includes 7 pieces (wedding invitation, celebration invitation, directions/information card, belly band, rsvp card, printed rsvp envelope and a thank you card) start at $1500.
- A side note: Papercupp makes no money on the printing. I simply want them to have the most delightful stationary possible at the most reasonable price - comparable companies lump in the design fee with the printing and will say custom stationary starts at $2500. I have simply broken it down.
- Papercupp is also available to to the envelope decorating, stuffing and labeling, postage stamp sticking (custom from photostamps.com, of course!) and send them in the post (hand canceled from New York, New York) for an additional fee. Stuffing, packaging, labeling, decorating fee $500
- On timing …
At papercupp there are no templates. There are no cookie cutter designs where we simply plug in your name event date. We design truly bespoke stationary fitted especially for you. For this reason, we need at least 8 weeks from our first meeting to deliver your custom wedding suite. Ideally, four months before your mail date is the best time to get started. You should have your invitations in the mail 6 months before a destination wedding and at least 2 months before a local wedding. Other announcements and invitations can be ready to mail in 2-4 weeks.-

It’s a Boy!
April 1, 2008
The story of Connor’s birth! I love sharing things from my inbox! Today I got the long awaited news from Sharon and Scott that their baby finally arrived. And with the news came the story of the birth, and since it is an interesting story I thought I would share it here:
I apologize for not updating sooner; I know some of you have been in suspense since I went into labor last Tuesday, not knowing what was going on. I am happy to report that the baby is here, and perfectly healthy, and Scott and I are doing great as well! I’m writing our birth story below (a somewhat abridged (but still quite looooooong) version, and safe for those who are squeamish about “those sorts of things”… the complete version is available upon request!).
The basics:
Connor Daniel Lamb
March 26, 2008
8:33 pm
8 lbs, 8 oz. (seriously!!)
21 inches
As some of you may know, I had a very smooth pregnancy until developing mild hypertension in the final two months. Although not a major risk in itself, gestational hypertension can be associated with kidney and liver stress, which I began to show signs of in the last two weeks. I was always within “safe” ranges of blood pressure and kidney and liver function, but was closely monitored as my condition gradually intensified. Last Monday (the 24th), our midwife suggested we consider scheduling a cesarean if I hadn’t given birth within a week, because my condition could rapidly deteriorate with no warning if I went on being pregnant. We knew the baby was doing great (based on some tests and an ultrasound we’d had that morning), but had to be concerned about my health at that point. We were, of course, incredibly disappointed at the thought of scheduling surgery instead of going ahead with the natural birth we’d wanted and prepared for.
Unexpectedly, my water broke on Monday night!! It is somewhat unusual for a first-time mom’s water to break without any other signs of impending labor (and I had no signs). Nonetheless, our midwife was excited and told us to get some sleep and keep her updated. Tuesday morning, I started having mild and irregular contractions. By Tuesday afternoon, my contractions were steady and regular. In a matter of hours, they went from being 10-12 minutes apart to 4-5 minutes apart, and much more intense. We left for the birth center at 10:20 pm, and during the hour-long ride there, I labored in the back seat with extremely strong contractions coming 2-3 minutes apart. We arrived expecting that we were nearing the end of Stage 1!
My body was apparently playing tricks on me, and our midwife reported that I’d only just started to dilate. So, into the birth tub I went… I labored for an hour or so in the tub, while our midwife’s apprentice massaged my back and Scott cooked some couscous for me (which I later refused to eat or even smell!!). After a while, I labored on the bed, and then on a yoga ball. At 6:00 am, I began to fear that “the baby isn’t coming,” and announced this repeatedly. Sure enough, the midwife verified my statement: I was only slightly more dilated and the baby’s head was still high in my pelvis.
Now, 36 hours after my water broke and more than 12 hours into active labor, I hadn’t slept in over two days. Our midwife was concerned about the energy I was expending on a labor that was progressing very slowly, especially because my organs were not functioning at optimal levels. She expressed that we shouldn’t lose hope and that I should continue to give my body a chance to give birth to the baby. We discussed several options and their risks and benefits, and finally decided to transfer to the hospital where I would receive an epidural to allow me to sleep and conserve energy for the pushing stage. At this point, we were a tad disappointed that our baby would be born in a hospital, but we felt it was the best choice given the circumstances. Our midwife (Tracey) and her apprentice (Sabrina) led the way, and I was admitted around 7:30 am.
I got the epidural and settled in for a nap. After an hour, Tracey woke me to report that my contractions had gotten very weak and spaced out since the anesthesia kicked in, and that she wanted to start a Pitocin drip to induce stronger, more regular contractions. Scott and I were alarmed at this suggestion, since if you are planning a natural delivery you must avoid Pitocin like the plague (it greatly increases the likelihood that an operative delivery or cesarean will be the outcome). We discussed it with Tracey and decided it was, ironically, our only remaining chance for a natural delivery. The Pitocin would stimulate my body to do the work of labor while the epidural allowed me to sleep, so I would be able to wake up and get back in the game when it was time to start pushing. The Pitocin worked immediately, giving me strong contractions practically on top of one another. Connor, the little trooper, kept a strong and steady heart rate throughout, and even spent most of the day kicking. He was working really hard to find the exit, as you can see in the nursery photo - look at how cone-headed he was!!
I remained on the Pitocin for the rest of the day, and only made two more centimeters’ progress. Tracey brought her obstetrician to meet me, and discuss the now very real possibility of a cesarean. Although I dreaded having surgery (both from a personal and a philosophical perspective), we knew we were putting my health (and therefore Connor’s health) at risk by continuing to labor indefinitely. The decision to go ahead with the surgery was bittersweet… we were sad about it, but also extremely relieved to be done with a long and difficult labor, and so excited to meet our baby in a matter of hours!!
Tracey checked on my progress at the very last minute… literally as they were rolling me out the door en route to the operating room… just to see if there was any shred of hope remaining for a natural delivery. No hope left, she said to me, “Sharon, I think we’ve done everything we can and your body has done everything it can. I don’t think you should have any regrets about this, and even though I know it’s not what you wanted, you’re going to meet your baby in just a few minutes and that’s the important thing.” I knew she was right, and was rolled to the OR feeling apprehensive about the surgery but knowing it was the right decision. It was comforting knowing that Tracey would be assisting the surgeon and that Sabrina would be my secondary support person during the times when Scott was not allowed in the room or was with the baby.
Scott was with me during the operation, holding my hand. We used the relaxation techniques we’d prepared for labor in order to keep me calm during the procedure. Just minutes after the surgery began, we heard our baby’s cries!! It was the most beautiful sound in the world. The pediatrician brought the baby to Scott, who lowered him to my face so I could kiss him. Then, they went to the nursery together for Connor’s newborn exam. Sabrina took over for Scott and held my hand for the rest of the surgery. I was given Demerol, and became totally loopy! Days later, she told me all of the things I said, and it was indeed hilarious.
After the surgery was over, I went to recover and Sabrina stayed with me, massaging my legs to make the swelling go down. When Scott and Connor were done in the nursery, they came to my recovery room and I got to hold Connor and nurse him for the first time. I don’t even remember this, but luckily Sabrina took tons of pictures… our first family photos!
Afterward, we were transferred to a private room where Scott and Connor and I stayed for the next three nights. The recovery from surgery has been frustrating at times, but I generally feel well. Scott and I have spent the time falling in love with Connor… we can’t take our eyes off of him. Scott has done pretty much all of the baby care, changing diapers and rocking and bouncing and giving baths, so that I can rest and spend my energy nursing. We finally came home on Saturday morning, and have been resting and recovering and bonding as a new family. We love our beautiful little blue-eyed boy, who is extremely sweet and inquisitive (and frighteningly strong for a newborn!!).
We’ve attached a few photos below so that you can see what the little one looks like. I apologize that we weren’t able to send these out sooner, but we had a long week full of unexpected turns, and are just now starting to catch up. We really appreciate all of the well-wishes and congratulations messages we’ve received. Your support means a lot to us as we recover from the surgery experience, and we know Connor is very lucky to be growing up so well-loved by our friends and family!! Please forgive us if you’ve left phone messages and haven’t heard back yet… we will be in touch as soon as we can!
Thanks again for your love and support… enjoy these photos for now, and we can’t wait for you to meet Connor!
Love,
Sharon and Scott

Have you considered introducing literature into your wedding?
March 27, 2008
Have you ever dreamed of being the subject of a Romance Novel? Here is a unique way to share your story with your friends and family. Editor Michael Cohen, of One True Romance, tells your story in a full-length, custom-written book to share with your wedding guest and family. What most brides end up doing is giving the novel out as a gift at the wedding. I haven’t read one yet, but I love reading romance novels!
Chapter three: About 20 minutes into the movie Mike began to pay an inordinate amount of attention to Kristin’s hand as it lay on the armrest. Drawn as he was into the movie’s unfolding plot, he couldn’t help but think about the fact that Kristin was sitting there next to him, She looked beautiful, her hair falling in a straight line past her shoulders. She gazed out from under long, soft lashes as she watched the move with intense eyes. He sneaked another sideways glance at her hand. Should I go in? He focused back on the screen. Yeah, I should. He waited a few beats and tied to be casual as he slide his hand over hers and laced their fingers together…

Barefoot, Bonfires and Barbeques. The weekend getaway wedding
Are you looking for a different approach to your wedding? Killington Vermont, has a lot to offer. A great place to think about getting married at is mountainmeadowslodge Bill & Anne Mercier has a unique approach to hosting your event. What I loved about Mountain Meadows Lodge was they treat your wedding like a mini-getaway. They shift the focus from the wedding being all about one day to more of a whole weekend. Does the idea of barefoot, bonfires and barbeque appeal to you? The idea is to come on Thursday and enjoy the place with your friends and family, almost like a family reunion. Your friends and family spend the weekend enjoying the lake, fishing, kayaking, and boating. Volleyball, badminton, horseshoes, can also keep you busy. You don’t want to forget the hot-tub, sauna, pool, and game-room. Of course the free roaming farm animals always add an element of Vermont charm! Of course when I was there it was winter, but it is gorgeous even under all the snow!

This is where the lake is, Right now it looks like a field of snow, but it is actually a lake!

One can sit around an enjoy the lake!

What others are saying!

And I am not the only one writing about Mountain Meadow Lodge, this couple has written about their experience hiking, the Appalachian trail, falling in-love, and their own wedding at MML in their Appalachian Trail Journal In addition to Mountain Meadow Lodge, Killington has more to offer to a bride. There is also a great network of local businesses and vendors available. Greenbrier Inn, is right down the street and can easily and comfortably accommodate any additional guests from your wedding, in the event you have more guest then MML has rooms for. Greenbrier Inn, a modern yet country style inn, also has a fantastic store, which is a dangerous place to go into with your credit card! I LOVED everything in there. I am going to start with some pictures from this AMAZING store, then I will add some pictures of the inn.

The also have a bridal registry! (Why didn’t I know this before I got married!)

And some pictures of the inn.
I wish I had these decorating skills!

Then of course, Hair, make-up and massages! Every bride needs that! For hair and make-up their is a salon,
mountain cuts salon.I didn’t get to make it to the salon, so I took a picture of a picture! This will give you some sense of what the salon is like

Services at the salon range from hair, nails, tanning, waxing, makeup application, facials and body treatments. I always like to find out what their favoirte treatment is. In this case, the pedicure throne!I also met the nicest massage therapist, Petra O’Neil. Here is her room that she decorated like a garden. She has her own massage room right at Mountain Medows Lodge, which is so convient!

For me, there is nothing better in life then a great massage! I would probably get a massage every week if I could! So you know I was checking out the menu!

and Petra’s favorite!

Being a wedding photographer it is always interesting to meet anouther wedding photographer. I was introduced to Barb Wood.Barb has a really warm personality, spending time meeting her was so pleasant, and I learned a few tricks. I asked Barb to send me some of her photographs. This picture here, I think I almost flipped when I saw this! But she taught me her trick (Put the grain where you want the animals to be, if they are eating, they are not going anywhere!) Brilliant!

with the Applicain Trail right there, many of the couples getting married found MML while hiking!

Barb is also familiar with the local landscape, she knows where the waterfalls and cascades are

Could we asks the ducks to pose perfectly for every picture we want to take?

This couple was going to be married outside, no matter what!
Now a Vermont wedding would not be complete without Ben and Jerry’sSo I got to meet with Sarah De Candio who owns a
Ben and Jerry’s Ice Creamshop right in Rutland. I was really wishing my husband Pete, who also owns an icecream (way to far from Killington to deliever an icecream cake too without it becoming soup!) was with me. I am sure that he and Sarah would have had a lot to talk about.

Here is just a little one we were eating - yum!

Of course being Ben and Jerry’s your wedding cake can come in all sorts of crazy sizes and flavors. Sarah said the most unusual cake she has made so far has been a basketball. And the most popular cake, (besides the traditional ones) is cow cakes!

Picking out flowers from far away seemed like it would be difficult to me, but Bonnie Hawley, from
Hawley’s Floristhas the experiance and expertise to make choosing your wedding flowers a fun and easy experiance from anywhere!Bonnie has known since the time she was a child that she wanted to be a florist, and has been in the business for 30 years. Bonnie takes the time to find out what brides are truely thinking of in terms of their flowers, and by exchaning emails and pictures and phone calls, together they can create beautiful floral arrangements from anywhere! Her newest venture is the creation of Viewmont FarmI like asking what is popular, Bonnie said that most brides having Vermont Weddings are looking to use local and seasonal flowers. One unique idea one of her brides was having her use Peacock feathers in her design! I never would have thought of peacock feathers!

I’ve got to say, after spending a few days in Killington, I think I was wishing I had had my wedding here! If you are considering a destination wedding, you have to consider Killington. The beauty, and relaxed feeling creates a real calm within that everyone mentioned. As I was leaving after the two days I could really understand the “calm” everyone discribed.
